CBG? What is it? Why does it matter?

Updated: Feb 2

CBG (Cannabigerol) is a cannabinoid that is the precursor or the "mother" to the cannabinoids that we know of today. CBG is gaining popularity and customers are now walking into retailers looking for CBG. However, there are few medical cannabis strains that are naturally high in CBG.

But why? CBG is being researched and appears to have a lot of potential for medical benefits. CBG is thought to balance and improve mood by increasing the body's Anandamide - a chemical found in the body and has the ability to bind to both CB1 and CB2 receptors- potentially impacting a host of physiological mechanisms, including appetite stimulation, mood fluctuation, and pain.

Fun Fact! Anandamide is found in high levels after vigorous exercise- researchers think that this "bliss" chemical has to do with the "exercise high."

CBG has also been found to inhibit the reuptake (inactivation) of gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) an inhibitory neurotransmitter found in the brain, leading to an increase and GABA, which is responsible for reducing the activity of neurons. The effect of CBG on GABA is thought to promote relaxation and decrease anxiety.

A study published in 2018 in the International Journal of Molecular Science found that CBG may play a role in preventing neurodegeneration. Inflammation and stress play a role in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, and Multiple Sclerosis. These diseases contribute to major mortality and disability throughout the world and do not have a cure. Researchers are both looking for cures to these diseases as well as looking for chemicals and compounds that may reduce the progression and symptoms of these disorders. CBG has been found to inhibit oxidation in cells, increase cell oxidation defenses leading to less cell death of these neuronal cells. The same study also found that CBG was able to show a neuroprotective effect on Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, and MS as well as anti-inflammatory benefits in inflammatory bowel disease.

CBG works to fight inflammation, pain, nausea and works to slow the proliferation of cancer cells. Research has shown it also significantly reduces intraocular eye pressure caused by glaucoma. Strains high in CBG will be beneficial in treating conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, and cancer.

While we do not have a CBG specific line, our recent HYBRID RSO has high CBG. The strain is Black Jack and it tested out with almost 8% CBG!
