Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Updated: Jan 30

The Months of December, January and February, Emerald Bay Extracts is going to donate $1 per RSO syringe that is sold to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

I became a nurse in 2013. I knew as soon as I graduated from nursing school, that my passion would be to work in Hematology and Oncology. I began my first job on a busy heme/onc floor in Palo Alto, CA. I loved meeting my patients, young and old. Many patients I treated were spending weeks if not months in the hospital.

I remember a young man with Leukemia whose parents lived far away and weren't able to stay with him during his treatment due to financial reasons. He had to be treated at this hospital because of how rare and aggressive his particular leukemia was. He was alone is his room for over three months receiving chemotherapy treatment, dealing with secondary infections and sepsis, while his body teetered on needing to be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He was alone, but never really alone. As nurses, we spent hours in his room, we laughed and told jokes, we sang and played him “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” on the Ukulele for his 18th birthday. Eventually, his body gave in to the I sat with him at his last moments, I thought, “How can this happen to an 18 year old, or to anybody?”

Through those months and years of taking care of cancer patients, I became so attached to my patients. Their fight was my fight, their setbacks were my setbacks and their triumphs were also mine. I’d make sure to stop at Starbucks on the way in to bring my patient’s father his favorite coffee, and gently wake him up from his cot with the beverage. I learned Spanish to better serve my hispanic patients, to be able to explain to them what the Doctors were saying. I held the hands of people while they had large bore needles poked in their bones for a biopsy and listened to the deepest secrets.

Cancer patients are not like the other patients that are in the hospital. They come in feeling unwell but otherwise physically strong and healthy, and get progressively sicker as either chemotherapy or disease begin to chip away at their bodies. These patients often go to the doctors office feeling like they have the flu, and after some bloodwork is taken they are told to go immediately to the hospital, do not go home, even if it is the middle of the night. The come into the hospital strong and otherwise healthy, but so scared at how fast everything is moving. Often they wake up the following day with a PICC line in their arm and their Resident Doctor going over their chemotherapy treatment plan, dropping words that they have to Google, like Bone Marrow Biopsy and Immunotherapy.

I watched so many of these patients start out stoic and strong and slowly get weaker, more symptomatic, more tired. Many of the symptoms are a result of the aggressive chemotherapy treatments that Leukemia and Lymphoma patients have to go through. Lack of appetite, nausea, pain and depression are all common among these patients.

What does this have to do with cannabis? Many of my patients found relief using this plant. They found it could help with pain relief, reducing the need for opiates. They found that it helped with their appetite, when the Doctor was recommending they drink 5 protein shakes per day to keep their weight up. Many patients found it could help with their anxiety, as each day, they were anxious about how their bodies would react to new chemotherapy drugs, or if their cancer had progressed. I also observed many patients looking for cannabis anywhere they could find it. I saw the need for clean, potent, tested, medical grade cannabis products in the legal marketplace. Through this realization, I started Emerald Bay Extracts. I began developing full spectrum cannabis oil products for the medical consumer. Building off of the techniques described by Rick Simpson, I created my own version of RSO in a licensed lab, triple testing all material for potency, pesticides as well as presence of heavy metals. Using the highest quality ingredients, sourced from farms where I know the farmers first name, Emerald Bay Extracts produces RSO that is potent, easy to use and safe. My company prides itself in bringing these products to market and allowing access to those in need, all over California.

Giving back is one of the core values of my company. That is why we are donating $1 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, from each syringe of RSO that is sold between December 1st, 2019 and February 28th, 2019. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has invested over $1.2B in blood cancer research. As we grow as a company, we vow to support organizations that are impacting the lives of our patients.
